Guide to grants for women in need...

The Society currently offers help to working age women who:

  • live alone

  • have limited savings

  • have limited income

  • receive some form of means tested benefit

  • are not eligible for help from any other charity

  • are not students

We help these women in a number of ways:

  • with regular allowances paid monthly for a limited period of time

  • by sending birthday and Christmas cards to our regular beneficiaries, some of whom receive no other cards

  • by sign-posting to other potential sources of funding

Please read the guidance below and then complete the enquiry form or for an informal discussion please telephone us on 0300 3651886 - the helpline is open Monday - Friday 9.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. and 2.00 p.m. - 4.30 p.m.  Whatever tariff you are on calls cost the same as to a number starting with 01 or 02, and if you have inclusive minutes with your landline or mobile contract the 0300 number will be included too.

The Society no longer makes one-off essential needs grants. New applications are currently being accepted only from women below state pensionable age. You can see some examples of the help that we give on this web site.

The Society assists women resident in the United Kingdom who are living alone in their own home (either owned or rented) and in genuine financial need, irrespective of social status. We generally assist women who are not eligible for help from any other trade, professional or Service benevolent fund.  Some purposes for which we are unable to offer assistance are listed on another page, together with suggestions where help may be found.

All beneficiaries are receiving means-tested benefits of some kind. At present we consider women for regular assistance where they have savings of less than 5,000. These criteria are subject to periodic review by the Trustees.

Unlike some charities we do not have either paid or volunteer fieldworkers who can visit applicants. We therefore rely on the completion of the application form, and the provision of supporting documents. If these are complete we can usually give a firm decision within a few days. However, we cannot give a decision until we receive all of the documents that we have requested, and we do ask applicants and their professional advisers to help us give a quick response by ensuring that the paperwork is complete before it is submitted. You can download a printer-friendly copy of our guidance notes for the completion of an application form
